Preparing to Join a PSA Grower Training Zoom Meeting

Device Options for Joining Zoom Sessions

  1. Computer: connected to Internet with a webcam, microphone, and speaker
  2. Computer: connected to Internet with webcam. Phone to join audio. Please note: If you’re concerned about broadband issues, this would be the best option for you.
  3. Mobile Device with camera: connected to Internet via a WiFi network
  4. Mobile Device with camera: connected to Internet using your personal data plan

Prior to Joining Zoom Session (preferably the day before)

  1. Test your Internet connection speed for download and upload speed by visiting Speed Test. Select “Go” and wait for results.
    • Zoom’s recommended participant bandwidth for meetings and webinars:
      • Receiving 1080p HD video requires 2.5 Mbps (up/down)
      • Sending 1080p HD video requires 3.0 Mbps (up/down)
  2. Download the Zoom Client for Meetings program (computer) or the Zoom App from the App store (mobile devices).
  3. Start a Zoom Test Meeting with yourself on your device.

How to Join a Zoom Session

  1. Click the “link to join” in the email provided by the host at least 15 minutes prior to session start. The organizer may schedule a pre-meeting to check connectivity of participants or may ask you to join earlier for this purpose. Follow instructions in the email you are provided.
  2. Follow prompts to “open” and/or “allow” Zoom.
  3. Practice muting and unmuting your microphone so you’ll be able to ask and answer questions throughout the course. Select “Unmute” in bottom left corner of the Zoom window (or if no microphone or speaker is available, use the phone number and meeting ID provided in the email to “call in” with a phone).

  4. Start your video. Attendance and engagement will be monitored throughout the course and you must be visible to the presenters to be eligible to receive the PSA/AFDO certificate of course completion.
  5. Test your speaker and microphone by selecting the up arrow next to the microphone icon.

  6. After successfully joining the Zoom session, close all other applications (email, social media, etc.) on your computer for optimum internet speed during the Zoom session.

Online Meeting Etiquette—Best Practices

  1. Mute microphone at all times, except when speaking. If you know there is a lot of background noise at your location, consider using a headset (headphone with a microphone).
  2. Rename your Zoom window to include your full name. Hover over the bar at the bottom of the Zoom window, then click on “Participants” to open the list.manage participants Zoom icon
